The freak-folk icon is at his most gentle on his latest single.

Devendra Banhart has announced his new album Ape In Pink Marble. The record, his first in nearly three years, is produced by the singer alongside his longtime collaborators Noah Georgeson and Josiah Steinbrick.

Today you can hear the album’s opener, ‘Middle Names’, which finds Banhart softly singing over a delicate arrangement of acoustic guitar and subtle electronic textures. The singer has always brought a wide range to his work and this is nestled comfortably on the most fragile side of that spectrum. It’s a good place for him to be.

Listen to ‘Middle Names’ below and look for Ape In Pink Marble September 23 via Nonesuch.

No word if we’ll see him rejoin with the Funky Bunch, but fingers crossed.
