Another album from the prolific songwriter.

It’s already been a busy year for Mark Kozelek. He dropped a collaborative album with Jesu in January and Mark Kozelek Sings Favorites, a collection of covers. Now Kozelek has announced the next official Sun Kil Moon album — the proper follow-up to last year’s Universal Themes — a double album titled Common As Light And Love Are Red Valleys of Blood.

The album won’t be out until next February, but you can hear its first single now. ‘God Bless Ohio’ is a delicately performed, sprawling epic in the style of 2014’s Benji (which we named our Album Of The Year). It features heartbreaking passages that focus on Kozelek’s family life, but in keeping with his stream-of-consciousness writing it also contains references to Shawshank Redemption, Jimmy Fallon and the line “Domino’s Pizza brings me back to when I was younger, when I was younger, when I was young, when I was younger…”

Listen to it on Sun Kil Moon’s website and look for Common As Light And Love Are Red Valleys of Blood February 28, 2017.
