The album’s futuristic riddims continues the flawless run from Demdike Stare’s DDS label.

Jamaican duo Equiknoxx are the latest project to be highlighted by Demdike Stare’s DDS label with their debut album Bird Sound Power. The album, out tomorrow, features the group’s futuristic, experimental take on dancehall, twisting jagged riddims with a singular sense of sound design.

Bird Sound Power is described as “something special” from the label and they’re not wrong. The collection features primarily recent work, but also cherry picks Equiknoxx strongest material dating back to 2009, all while marking their first time on vinyl.

One of the best, ‘A Rabbit Spoke To Me When I Woke Up’, catches Equiknoxx using icy drum beats, UFO synths and eerie bird calls (their signature) to make dancehall as fluid and sinister as Terminator 2’s T-1000. At times it jumps from dancehall traditions to the same dark heights as Forest Swords’ debut, but more often it simply sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard.
