Kanye points to his time opening for The Rolling Stones and Bono as inspiration for his new floating stage.

As Kanye West’s Saint Pablo tour continues, the impact of the show’s stage design is still rippling. West unveiled the tour’s floating stage in Indianapolis on Thursday this week and he sat down with E! following the performance to discuss the ideas and inspirations behind it.

Speaking to E!’s Ken Baker, West explained that he and his team spent about 8 months planning the show, meeting and recruiting the best stage designers they could find. “I want people to have a fun time, make it not be just about watching the artist,” West explained, saying that the design allowed people to focus on their own experience. While the team may make some changes as they go along, West admitted the “basic idea is there.”

The Chicago rapper also says his time opening for Bono and The Rolling Stones was an inspiration, as well as watching Michael Jackson tapes and studying the work of Daft Punk, Radiohead, Trent Reznor, and even film director Ridley Scott.

“This take on the future and the way it connects with music, I feel that’s the vibe,” West told Baker before referencing The Life of Pablo song ‘Father Stretch My Hands’. “I can stretch out […] and give the crowd something they hadn’t seen before.”
