Prince’s band The Revolution performed the first of their reunion shows at First Avenue in Minneapolis last night (September 1), the club where the majority of Purple Rain was filmed.

The band – made up of Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, BrownMark, Dr. Fink, and Bobby Z. including special guests guitarist Dez Dickerson and bassist André Cymone – played a raft of Prince’s greatest hits, including ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ and ‘Little Red Corvette’. Neo-soul singer Bilal also joined The Revolution for ‘When Doves Cry’. See clips of the performances below.

Back in April, The Revolution announced that they would reunite to honour their late leader’s legacy. “We have decided, after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of Prince, that we would like to come out and do some shows,” said Melvoin at the time. “We want to let you know that we’ll be there soon.”

The Revolution were one of Prince’s most iconic bands, having played on several of the late artist’s best records, including Around The World In A Day. But it was the film Purple Rain and its accompanying soundtrack that really secured their iconic place in the Prince canon.
