Jay Z’s new endeavor will take a look at the criminal justice system in America.

Next week Jay Z will unveil the details of the first project in his new film and television deal with The Weinstein Company – a “groundbreaking television event series” about the late Kalief Browder, who was arrested in 2010 for second-degree robbery and imprisoned for three years with no conviction. He was only 16-years-old when he was first charged.

Two of his years in Rikers Island were spent in solitary confinement. He was released in 2013 after his case was dismissed due to so many trial postponements. In that time, Browder maintained his innocence and refused a plea deal.

In January 2015, President Barack Obama wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post urging there be an end to what he called an “overuse” of this isolation punishment, primarily predicated on the conditions in which Browder lived in Rikers. Six months later, Browder hanged himself.

The particulars have yet to be announced, although Jay and Harvey Weinstein, as well as filmmakers Jenner Furstan and Mike Gasparro will reveal more at a press event in New York City. The show is set for Bar Rescue network Spike TV.
