Someone has turned a Dalek into a DIY synthesizer
If you’re looking for a DIY music project to take on, then you could always take inspiration from Doctor Who fan and synthesizer enthusiast Martin Orman, who has turned an old Dalek model into an electronic instrument.
Orman picked up the battered Dalek toy from a car boot sale, and installed a synth written onto an clone of an open-source Arduino chip. It runs on battery or mains power, and has two mono outputs.
As his You Tube video demonstrates, some of the spheres adorning the Dalek’s shell have been replaced with knobs, which are used to shape the instrument’s sound.
If installing a synth inside a Dalek is out of your ability range, Modal Electronics recently released a £79 DIY synth that the company claims can be built by anyone in just 10 minutes. [via MatrixSynth]
