The price for Technics‘ new SL-1200GR turntable seems to have been revealed, and while it’s not as expensive as last year’s reissue, it’s still not quite as cheap as some might have hoped.

According to Gizmodo, the new “standard” model of the revamped SL-1200, announced on January 4, will cost $2,300 in Canada, which roughly translates to $2,000 in US money (about £1,500). Last year’s SL-1200G and GAE models cost a massive $4,000 each.

The news will come as a blow to Technics fans looking to replace their old SL-1200s: it’s possible to get a pair of CDJs not much more money, or a pair of Pioneer’s PLX-1000 turntables for much less.

Technics unveils "standard" version of its updated SL-1200 turntable

Earlier this week, Technics’ creative director Hiro Morishita told The New York Times why the company had turned away from DJs and towards the audiophile market with its reissued line of turntables.

“Our concept is analog records for hi-fi listening,” he said. “DJs are fine, too, but as a marketing target it’s problematic. We don’t want to sell the 1200 as the best tool for DJing. The 1200 is the 1200.”

Despite the high price tag, the initial run of last year’s limited edition SL-1200GAE turntable sold out in under 30 minutes when it went on sale in Japan.
