Ocean gets a rare interview with Jay Z.

Earlier today, Frank Ocean debuted a Beats 1 show called blonded RADIO. While he did not host the broadcast, clips from an interview between him and Jay Z were played throughout.

In the conversation, Frank and Jay talked about how terrestrial radio works and why the current, advertising-based model is detrimental to getting good and diverse music out into the public sphere. Jay says:

“You take these pop stations, they’re reaching 18-34 young white females. So they’re playing music based on those tastes. And then they’re taking those numbers and they’re going to advertising agencies and people are paying numbers based on the audience that they have. So these places are not even based on music. Their playlist isn’t based on music… It’s not even about the DJ discovering what music is best.

“With technology and everything moving forward[…] the musicians, radio, and these things that are supposed to be instruments for the arts, should exist. And it shouldn’t be about advertisement.”

Hov was recently voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the first rapper to ever be nominated and inducted. In a tweet earlier this week he wrote: “By the way, this is a win for US. I remember when rap was said to be a fad. We are now alongside some of the greatest writers in history.”
