An experimental club EP emerging from creative limitations.

Madison, WI producer Jordan Cohen is back with his second release for Astral Plane Recordings, the label offshoot of Gabe Meier’s always-on-point club music blog.

Meier (who’s behind our monthly For Club Use Only column charting up the best new club tracks, edits and mixes) picked up on Cohen’s output as Chants last year with the The Zookeeper EP, which touched on grime, ambient and IDM over five ambitiously varied tracks.

The former jazz drummer returns to the label next month with Amethyst Dust, a four-track EP that finds creativity in Cohen’s self-imposed limitations, taking deranged horns into overdrive on ‘Hellions’, playing with heavy weaponry on ‘Irruptions’ and ‘Amethyst Dust’ and settling into a 100bpm stumble on ‘Whole World Crumble’.

“Amethyst Dust is a record built for club play, but its creator has come to the material from a fundamentally outsider perspective,” says the label, “resulting in a final product that is both akin to and unrecognizable from the work of likeminded artists.”

If you’ve enjoyed recent material by Air Max ’97 and M.E.S.H., sniff this one out – stream the whole EP above and grab it from Astral Plane Recordings ahead of its March 3 release.
