The label will also release an album from Tarawangsawelas.

Rabih Beaini’s Morphine label has announced a series of events celebrating Indonesian music at Berlin’s Berghain club, together with the release of an album from Indonesian duo Tarawangsawelas.

Tarawangsawelas are one of the acts scheduled to appear at Raung Raya, a series of five events at Berghain programmed by Beaini and Belgium’s Europalia Festival due to take place from October 19 to January 16, 2018.

As well as Indonesian hardcore band Senyawa, who have appeared on Morphine and collaborated with Beaini several times over the past few years, the series will include traditional gamelan from Al Suwardi and Karinding Attack, a group who make their own instruments out of bamboo. The opening event features the music of influential US musician Moondog, arranged for gamelan by Iwan Gunawan and Stefan Lakatos.

Tarawangsawelas hail from Bandung, the capital of Indonesia’s West Java province, and are known for performing a contemporary version of Tarawangsa, a sacred music from Sundanese West Java. According to the label, Wanci, released on October 5, is a “minimalist, cosmic album composed with a careful contemporary interpretation of one of the most mystical and spiritual genres in Indonesia.”

Wanci is the first album to be released on Morphine this year, and the first album on the label since 2015, when it issued long players from Pierre Bastien and the late Pauline Oliveros in collaboration with Ione.
