FACT mix 624: HAAi

Wonky, psychedelic club rhythms from the Phonox resident and Coconut Beats boss.

Teneil Throssell arrived in London from Australia six years ago, when she was the lead singer of a psychedelic band called Dark Bells. She was an avid collector of Turkish funk, Nigerian and Kenyan beats, but was turned on to club music after a trip to Berlin’s famed Berghain club.

Throssell – who picked the name HAAi from a song by Indonesian group The Panthers – found herself a regular slot at Dalston’s low-key Ridley Road Market Bar, where she mixed her collection up with party-starting house and techno. In 2016 she caught the attention of the booker for Brixton’s Phonox club, replacing Jasper James as its Saturday night resident.

Since then Throssell has gone from strength to strength, playing back-to-back with The Black Madonna at this year’s Sunfall Festival, landing herself a regular Rinse FM slot and starting her own party series and label, Coconut Beats; her debut 12″, Be Good, uses moody, percussive, techno as a backdrop for her own vocals.

Throssell is a fan of “long, winding, melon-twisting mixes,” and her FACT mix doesn’t disappoint in this respect, offering a mind-warping 70 minutes of simmering, psychedelic club tracks from artists as diverse as Avalon Emerson, Plastikman, Rrose, Tornado Wallace and the Pachanga Boys.

“This mix represents what I’m playing out at the moment as well as production that really inspires me,” Throssell says. “I wanted to keep it super percussive and kind of wonky and druggy with some new releases and fave classics.”
