Static-coated after-rave shelter on Nathan Fake’s remix of new Ninja Tune boys Grasscut

Download: Grasscut – Muppet (Nathan Fake remix)
(Available for seven days)

Border Community golden child Nathan Fake is on remix duty for ‘Muppet’, the first single from new Ninja Tune signings Grasscut. Here’s the story behind the original:

“I was talking to a bunch of people having a conversation none of us could be bothered to have”, says Grasscut’s Andrew Phillips. “And I could hear someone gossiping about a mutual friend behind me – I couldn’t resist pretending to text while actually recording them.”

“I wrote the song while walking home and recorded the vocal straight into my phone. Musically it had to go from a pop song to total self-destruction. I remember Marcus [O’Dair, the other half of Grasscut] ramming a drumstick into a cymbal, jamming the stick into a tom and bowing the cymbal furiously while I was yelling at the end. We really went there.”
There you go. Fake’s remix is a static-coated slow-burner with some serious oomph on the pads and snares, coming like that last moment of after-rave bliss before it all wears off and you just feel cold.
