Rick Tomlinson will leave behind his Voice of The Seven Woods guise for a new album to be released on his own private press imprint, Tchantinler Recordings. The acclaimed guitarist is now operating as Voice of The Seven Thunders, also the name of the LP.
According to a press release, this new project is a significant departure from what’s gone before, “infernal and primitive energies mingling with the bucolic reveries that won him previous acclaim.” It certainly sounds heavier, more electrified – for better or worse rockier – than the excellent Voice of The Seven Woods LP.
Voice of The Seven Woods was released through Twisted Nerve in 2007, and Tomlinson has released a number of additional CD-Rs, 7″s and cassettes over the past four years, earning a staunch cult following for his intense, meditative brand of psychedelia. For the most part he has stayed clear of the workaday live circuit, only playing select gigs with the likes of Träd, Gräs och Stenar, Dungen, Comets on Fire and 60s Catalan acid-folk icon Paul Riba.
Voice of The Seven Thunders finds Tomlinson incorporating the spirit of the aforementioned artists, along with that of Popol Vuh, Pugh Rogefeldt and Amon Düül II, into his sound. He recorded the album in Spring 2009 with Chris Walmsley (drums) and Rory Gibson (bass), at Andy Ramsey’s Stereolab studio with engineer Jimmy Robertson. Expect full-band live shows from Voice of The Seven Thunders this year.
The album will be released on February 1. You can listen to ‘The Burning Mountain’ here.
