“I’d stockpiled up so much stuff and you can kind of have to draw a line under it somewhere,” he says. “By banging something out it, it’s like the end of the chapter. It properly draws a line under it and allows you to move on.”
There’s also the type of bombast that has filled Aphex Twin interviews for years: “I’m a serial killer for sounds,” he tells Fader. “I collect sounds from other records so I have to know where they come from and how they’re made. I bought every old sampler in existence and bought all the sample libraries. Like a serial killer, basically. I’ve gone through all of the sounds and worked out where everyone got all their sounds from.”
The best excerpt, naturally, is confirmation that Syro is not the end of Aphex Twin: working on the album has him “kicked into gear” for new music. The album will be released on September 22/23, on triple-vinyl, CD and digital formats.
Update: It appears that two of the songs on Syro have been debuted live, in some form. Aphex Twin allegedly performed ‘4 bit 9d api+e+6’ at an ATP performance in 2007, while ‘2010 XMAS_EveT10 (thanaton3 mix)’ was performed live in 2010 (here as ‘Metz’); the latter has been issued a copyright claim by Warp, suggesting it’s the real thing.
