London students launch petition to name new graduate centre after Wiley

Students from east London’s Queen Mary University are petitioning their principal to name a new building after Wiley.

A petition on Change.org has called for the Bow university’s new graduate centre to be named in the grime icon’s honour, citing his “significant contribution to the field of music”.

The Wiley Graduate Centre would “raise ambitions” in a disadvantaged area of the city, say the campaigners, and would be a “fitting tribute” to the “drive and ambition” of both Wiley and the institution:

“We want the local students to see the Wiley Graduate Centre and believe that they can create their futures by working hard, just as Wiley did. We want to develop the social enterprise work Queen Mary is already committed to doing, and simply see this as an extension of that. We believe that our university has a social responsibility to raise aspirations of those who live in the area, even if they do not attend the university itself.”

What do we think? The Wiley Graduate Centre has a certain ring to it, for sure – though it’s not as cool as the proposed statue of him in Bow. Add your name to the 248 signatures so far at Change.org.
