Australian producers remix the sounds of the iconic Sydney venue.

The annual Vivid Festival kicked off in Sydney over the weekend. The 18-day winter festival runs from May 22 to June 8 this year, lighting up the harbour city with a vibrant display of colour and music.

The Sydney Opera House serves as the main hub for the festival and is lit up each year with striking visuals. This year’s festival welcomes a varied line-up of artists including Morrissey, Matthew Herbert, Squarepusher, Trevor Jackson and Robert Owens.

To mark the opening of the festival, three Australian electronic acts have created original compositions from field recordings caught around the Opera House. The recordings were captured by George Nicholas (also known as Hensen, one half of Cliques and one third of Seekae).

“Recording at the Sydney Opera House was great,” says Nicholas. “I barely stopped the recorder all day as there was a constant stream of bizarre noises. I went in there thinking I would mostly focus on the sounds of performers in the halls and rehearsal rooms but I ended up spending most of my time in the vast labyrinth of concrete rooms underneath the house.”

The field recordings feature the sounds of hot water pumps, plant rooms, the Australian Ballet dancers’ feet as they rehearse at the venue and the world’s largest mechanical action organ. The sounds have been remixed by electronic trio Seekae, wistful beatsmith Charles Murdoch and Sydney club producers Victoria Kim. You can hear their creations below.

Seekae and Charles Murdoch play FCX: 10 Years of Future Classic this Friday and Saturday. Victoria Kim play RBMA presents Goodgod Minceteria! this Friday. All events are part of the Vivid LIVE festival.
