The week’s best mixes: Pure Joy, DEBONAIR’s esoteric delights and Milan squat rave chaos

Each week, FACT trawls through the untamed world of free mixes, radio specials and live blends so you don’t have to.

This week, we’ve gone yin and yang with a razor-sharp mix from “techno logician” Pure Joy and a rough-and-ready rave dispatch from a Milanese squat party. Elsewhere, DEBONAIR, aka Debi Ghose, burns brightly with “space, intrigue and tenderness” for her Blowing Up The Workshop mix and Finn and Amy Becker go B2B for an energy-boosting blend that was made on a hangover. There’s also an amazing psychedelic dub rework of ‘Hotel California’, courtesy of Parisian mainstay I:Cube.

Pure Joy
The Astral Plane

You can always rely on “techno logician” Simon Docherty to deliver a seamless yet singular blend that surprises at every twist and turn. The co-founder of London’s Wild Combination party delivers the latest Astral Plane mix – the fourth in a series that began with E M P Y R E A L and includes P H Y S I C A L and C O L L A P S E – which runs the full gamut of emotions. From the darkly operatic drama of Shackleton’s ‘Twelve Shared Addictions’ to Cooly G’s breezy ‘Love Dub’, it never takes its foot off the gas.

LowKey
LowKey Macao

This absolute brawler from Diagonal Records collaborator Oliver Fay, aka LowKey, confirms that when it comes to raving, Italians do it better. Recorded live from a Milanese squat party for Haunter Records, it’s “a mutant mix from a mutant bastard” (in Fay’s words), exploding with jackhammer noise, twisted techno and flashes of speedcore. Taking in music from Aphex, Merzbow, Elysia Crampton and NON Worldwide, it’s the kind of blend you can’t do in halves.

DEBONAIR
Blowing Up The Workshop

Starting out as one of the instrumental figures in the rise of NTS, Debi Ghose has gone on to establish herself as a powerful conduit for all kinds of thought-provoking sounds from post-punk and industrial to techno, and out into more worldly climes. She steps up to the Blowing Up The Workshop series with a selection drawing on themes of “space, intrigue and tenderness,” which encompasses delicate ambient, richly colored synth wares, vocal studies, Fleetwood Mac and plenty more besides.

I:Cube
Trushmix 97

As one of the evergreen figures of the Parisian electronic music scene, Nicolas Chaix has long been recognized as an eclectic selector par excellence. His Versatile label continues to reach out to all manner of esoteric delights in curious corners, making him the perfect guest for Sotofett and Fett Burger’s proudly unpredictable Trushmix series. The obscurities run high from start to finish, arguably peaking with a psyched-out dub version of ‘Hotel California’ to drive the ID diggers wild.

Finn B2B Amy Becker

London DJ Amy Becker has become a regular voice and talent on London radio over the past few years, while Local Action’s Finn has emerged as one of UK club music’s most crucial producers and DJs. The pair go B2B for an hour that not only reps their peers and UK stalwarts like Slackk and Mumdance but also flies further afield, serving up treats from the likes of South Africa-born producer Okzharp and Manthe Ribane, RP Boo and “Munich Bass” duo Schlachthofbronx. And it was all done on a hangover.
