The Matador band brings back their Suicide-meets-Stax sound.

Matador Records band Algiers have announced their second album The Underside of Power, a cross-examination of oppression across the US and the UK made by a band who were already a part of the resistance before both the Brexit vote and Trump taking office.

“I heard someone say once that you don’t know what real power is until you’re on the wrong side of it. That was the inspiration for ‘The Underside of Power’. To be someone who has known first-hand, the full brunt of institutional force, the feeling of being completely vulnerable to it and powerless against it, is a bitter reality for the vast majority of people,” says frontman Franklin Fisher.

The quartet (which now features former Bloc Party member Matt Tong on drums) recorded the album last year with producers Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey) and Portishead’s Adrian Utley, who gave the band access to a playground of vintage synthesizers. It was mixed by Randall Dunn (Sunn O)))) with The Men’s Ben Greenberg on post-production duties.

Check out the video for ‘The Underside of Power’ below. It was directed by Henry Busby and Marcus Tortorici and splices footage from the Civil Rights Movement with what the contemporary fight looks like today.

The album is out June 23 and available for pre-order now. The LP includes a limited edition 7″ of album track ‘Walk Like a Panther’ and a 16-page zine created by the band.
