You can even upload your own sound via a mobile app.

UK boutique company Modal Electronics has announced the Modal CRAFTrhythm, a DIY drum machine that can be built in less than 10 minutes with no tools.

The CRAFTrhythm is a companion for last year’s £79 self-assembly CRAFTsynth. The eight-track drum machine is just as affordable at £99, but has a 16-step sequencer for making beats. It’s also possible to upload your own drum samples to it via a companion app called CRAFTapp.

Modal’s new drum machine is quite feature-packed for a DIY unit. Each of the eight tracks has its own mixer, sample select and tune control with three pitch modes alongside a low-pass filter and three envelopes for amplitude, filter and pitch.

There’s also built-in memory for storing up to 16 patterns, which can be chained into larger sequences. It transmits MIDI data over USB, includes a headphone and line output, and can be powered via a mini USB cable or AAA battery pack.

The new CRAFTapp works with both the drum machine and last year’s CRAFTsynth. It includes features such as a sequencer grid for making beats on your phone or tablet and, in the case of the synth, parameters not accessible from the synth panel such as filter morphing. It’s compatible with both iOS and Android platforms.

The CRAFTrhythm is released in December and will be available exclusively from Gear4Music, where it can be pre-ordered now.
