Animal Collective are in a fascinating  – and hazardous – point on their career trajectory.

2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion was pure critnip, a joyful amalgamation of tricks, licks and chants that zoomed to the top of many ‘best of’ polls. The record was arguably the apotheosis of their woozy psych-pop sound. A big act to follow, then (and judging by the critical indifference to Panda Bear’s Tomboy, a hard one too).

The Baltimore combo are now biting down on the bullet and readying their follow-up LP. According to Pitchfork, the album – their tenth studio album proper – will be titled Centipede Hz, and will arrive in September via Domino. The announcement was made in the form of a cryptic teaser trailer, pitched somewhere between Videodrome and James Ferraro’s Demon Channels. It’s as yet unclear whether the gnomic phrases spewing towards the camera are track titles or not.

If September seems like a long wait, the band recently made their Transverse Temporal Gyrus art project available to stream online.
