Two more gems dug up from the incomparable songwriter and producer’s archive are being re-released.

‘Foxy Pup’ and ‘Some Say’ were produced and mixed by Arthur Russell under the Nirosta Steel moniker, which saw him provide music for the songs of long-time confidant Steven Hall, who now fronts the tribute act Arthur’s Landing.

Recorded and engineered by legendary disco producer Bob Blank (who has written the liner notes for the releases), both records were initially slated for release on Rough Trade in 1985. You can hear Russell’s trademark drums and echoing voice throughout, making them more like a collaboration than a production job.

‘Some Say’ now appears on Wilde Calm Records as a hand-stamped run of 500 vinyl copies, featuring a b-side rework by Pocketknife using the BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55 drum machine, a machine famously used by Russell. ‘Foxy Pup’ is out on French label Hollie Records and is limited to only 300 vinyl copies.

Another Russell track dug up at the same time has not been slated for release, but you can listen to it elsewhere on FACT.
