Twitter's #music app may be on chopping block

After a hype-fueled launch, the app has stumbled.

Sources familiar with the matter tell All Things D that Twitter may kill its music discovery app, #music, just six months after launch. The app, which promised “a fresh approach to finding new music by using Tweets and follows to power discovery,” started strong, reaching #6 in App Store rankings, but has seen a steady decline in the rankings since.

The writing may have been on the wall all along: the Twitter executive who led the project’s development, Kevin Thau, left Twitter for Biz Stone’s mysterious Jelly a week after #music launched.

Twitter is currently restructuring its music team and its cross-platform strategy, the latter of which has seen the company team with would-be competitors Apple’s iTunes Radio and Rdio. FACT took a look at #music when it launched and our review was mixed.
