Giorgio Moroder to "recreate Studio 54" with travelling stage show

Disco pioneer plans party franchise.

Giorgio Moroder has revealed that he is planning a Las Vegas stage show that will “recreate Studio 54” and potentially travel the world.

Under the title ‘A Night With Giorgio Moroder’, the event would be “a permanent show, based on disco,” the producer explained to the Guardian. “I would do the DJing, but maybe before me we have another famous DJ, maybe somebody after. We of course have a ball, dancers in a cage: recreate Studio 54, and have it in Vegas, Macau, London.”

The project, which Moroder says is a collaboration with “a huge American management company”, wouldn’t be limited to his own productions, he added. “Of course I wouldn’t just use my own songs – there are so many great disco songs, Chic and all those guys – and I would do probably an hour and a half. We’re thinking of starting first in Vegas [but] it will probably be a bit like Blue Man Group – they have a franchise. We might even talk to the Cirque De Soleil team.”

Asked if the show would have a narrative along the lines of the ABBA musical Mamma Mia, he said that such a large project would take a year or more, whereas his idea “could be done in a few months.” He added: “The songs are there – maybe the first song would be [Donna Summer’s] ‘Love To Love You Baby’, or [Hues Corporation’s] Rock The Boat, which everybody says is the first disco song. But I don’t think we’re going to listen to the lyrics and create a story.”

Now 73, Moroder has staged an incredible comeback this year, appearing on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories and playing his first ever DJ set, as he told FACT this week – read our full interview with the man himself, where he reveals that he’s working on a track with vocals from the late, great Donna Summer.
