A history lesson in three minutes.

Sample-splicing remixer Jonny Wilson, aka Eclectic Method, has pieced together a whistle-stop tour of the history of sampling, cutting and pasting a selection of the most iconic beats and breaks that formed the building blocks of hip-hop and dance.

Starting with Paul McCartney introducing the Mellotron in 1963, the snappy three-minute clip takes in everything from the ‘Amen’ break that spawned jungle to the bedrocks of hip-hop like James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’, ESG’s ‘UFO’ and Billy Squier’s ‘The Big Beat’.

The video coincides with a 40th anniversary vinyl reissue of The Incredible Bongo Band’s Bongo Rock, which includes one of the most sampled tracks in history, ‘Apache’ – find out more here. [via The Vinyl Factory]
