Hear Nas, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and more dissect Illmatic for Spotify's Landmark documentary series

Key players tell the story of a hip-hop classic.

As part of its Landmark series of audio documentaries, Spotify has turned the spotlight on Nas’ Illmatic, which as you’ve probably noticed, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The in-depth feature (which lasts an hour and 20 minutes) features dozens of interview segments with the rapper himself, producers Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Large Professor and the A&R who secured him a deal, Faith Newman.

The aural history is interspersed with tracks from the album, which this week was reissued with a bonus disc of rarities.

Among the nuggets of history uncovered is the fact that Nas didn’t even sequence his own album, instead allowing Sony to sort out the tracklist.

“I didn’t really choose them, because it was too much to choose,” he explains. “I had the songs, they were apart of the list. But I couldn’t, because it was so many things I wanted to put on there it would’ve been a quadruple album.”
