London clubbing royalty Princess Julia celebrated in photography book What Would Julia Do?

Princess Julia’s name is not unwarranted – she is London club and fashion royalty.

Her life and career as DJ, model, muse and more represent an unbroken line that connects the original Blitz Kids (she was a core member of the Blitz Club scene and features in Visage’s ‘Fade to Grey’ video) through ’80s high society and ’90s house decadence, to electroclash and the Boombox scene and whatever strange and outré adventures people are getting up to in the capital’s hidden spaces today.

A new book, What Would Julia Do is a 64-page “photo-essay” put together with photographer Rebecca Thomas, featuring scenes from Julia’s life over the past five years, and includes cameos from the likes of Boy George, Dinos Chapman, Sue Tilley (Lucian Freud model and Leigh Bowery’s biographer), Henry Holland and Bruce LaBruce. It’s a glimpse into a world of big characters, deranged fabulosity and a shared loathing of homogeneity.

What Would Julia Do is available from May 23 at Donlon Books, Art Words Books, Society Books, the ICA bookshop, Maiden, Cock ‘n Bull Gallery and Colette Paris.
