Veteran Bay Area rapper The Jacka killed in shooting
Dominic Newton, better known as The Jacka, has passed away aged 37.

CBS San Francisco reports that Newton was gunned down in Oakland, California on Monday night. So far no suspects have been identified.

Newton was a veteran of the San Francisco rap community and collaborated with a who’s who of fellow Bay Area legends throughout his long career, including Mac Dre, E-40, Andre Nickatina and Yukmouth.

Newton originally made his name as a member of the group Mob Figaz in the late ’90s, before branching out as a solo artist. Last year he released Highway Robbery, a collaborative album with Philadelphia rapper Freeway.

Several rappers have taken to Twitter to share their condolences, including Raekwon, The Alkaholiks and Freddie Gibbs.

“R.I.P the jacka, had a chance to meet the homie cpl times & build with him & record some joints, my condolences to his family & friends,” wrote Raekwon.
