The Japanese noise veteran and LA artist Jamie Stewart join forces.

The official Record Store Day list might have delivered us some very slim pickings, but the unofficial releases are at least throwing up some intriguing projects. One such release is a collaboration between Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart and Japanese noise artist Merzbow, who have coined the name Merzxiu for their double act.

As The Wire reports, the duo will be pressing two 20-minute long tracks to vinyl and releasing them for Record Store Day on April 18. The collaboration dates back to 2010 when the pair played a show at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge together, but the self-titled album is their first formal release, the pair swapping music remotely with the assistance of a translator.

The record will be released by Kingfisher Bluez, who describe it as “two sides of brooding, pulsing noise to take you to a dark place.” It will be limited to 1000 copies and arrive on “splattered vinyl,” and 50 copies are available now through the label’s Bandcamp page for those who can’t get to a physical store on the day itself. Alternatively, you can stream the whole thing below.
