A Beastie Boys musical is set to open in London next month.

Licensed to Ill is a new show that follows Mike D, MCA and Ad-Rock on their journey from teenage punks to international hip-hop stars.

Artistic directors Simon Maeder and Adam El Hagar worked with musical comedy duos Abandonman and the Rubberbandits to produce the show, which combines live music and DJing with rapping, physical comedy and puppetry in the “eclectic, hilarious style that a show about the Beasties deserves.”

“The Beastie Boys’ story sheds light on many issues still raising hackles: racism towards and within rap; misogyny; the battle for hip-hop’s soul, between those using it for protest and for profit,” say the creators. “This loud, crazy show does to music theatre what hip-hop did to tracksuits: make them cool.”

Licensed to Ill runs from November 23 to December 12 at Camden People’s Theatre.
