FlyLo’s go-to jazz arranger obviously shares his love of comics.

Fresh from winning the inaugural American Music Prize for his surprise crossover success The Epic, jazz bandleader Kamasi Washington has revealed that he’s working on a graphic novel.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about his current projects, including a follow-up to The Epic and a 32-part saxophone composition (!), Washington said the graphic novel would be a companion piece to his triple album.

“I had a dream [with] a story that encompassed all the songs [on The Epic], which really led me to have the conviction that I was really going to put it out. So I’m creating a graphic novel for that,” said the FlyLo and Kendrick Lamar collaborator.

He’s also trying to put together a live show with “the full strings and the choir and the full band” behind The Epic. “I want to try to get that out to other places outside of L.A. as well.”
