The Houston producer explores “genre missteps” on his new EP.

Houston producer Matt “Wheez-ie” Mauldin is often best known for his take on footwork and juke, but his latest release is all about pushing into different sounds and finding delight in the unfamiliarity.

“Trying to make a genre of music, but missing the mark is sometimes more interesting to me,” he tells us of Questionable Taste, an EP he calls “a sort of genre misstep experiment” due next week on Skrillex’s free label Nest. Each track finds him taking wildly different approaches from the swerving techno of the title track the acid-dotted ‘That UH Track’ and the gentler comedown of the closing ‘Time Heals All Wounds’.
