‘Big Wok’

God bless Wolverhampton’s Preditah. Firstly, because he spells his name Preditah. Secondly, because his tracks feature a girl saying his name in the rudest possible voice, and as Roska, Funkystepz, Ill Blu and more have proved, there are few things more instantly appealing than that. Thirdly, because he’s just released an EP of rumbling, string-driven grime which could have been made in 2004, but still feels more vital than 99% of music that’s been made since then.

‘Solitaire’ might be the title track on this EP, but for me it’s all about the brilliantly titled ‘Big Wok’, which sharpens ‘Solitaire’s strings into something even more deadly and precise, and trades that track’s staccato wobbles for a subtler, but altogether more present bottom-end rumble. Plus, it’s a sino-grime track called ‘Big Wok’. Sometimes the devil really is in the details.
