Dirty Beaches – aka Alex Zhang Hungtai – is about to return with his most ambitious psychodrama to date.

Drifters/Love Is The Devil is a sprawling work, jettisoning 2011 breakthrough Badlands‘ loop-based strategies in favour of cross-genre grandeur and emotionally vulnerable songwriting. Drifters sees Huntai dabble in spartan post-punk, rickety industrial and devil-at-the-crossroads blues. Love Is The Devil, meanwhile, is an instrumental song-suite, alternately redolent of Angelo Badalamenti and Forest Swords. FACT have the first play of Drifters track ‘Casino Lisboa’ – a limber cut that sounds like a poltergeist beat combo covering Liquid Liquid. Click below to listen/shudder.

Drifters/Love Is The Devil will see release on May 21 through Zoo Music. Earlier this year, FACT sat down with Hungtai to discuss Andy Stott, Retromania and the personal traumas behind the record – head here to read. Hungtai is also set to play at the last ever All Tomorrow’s Parties event at Camber Sands.
