You’ll already have enjoyed the loopy videos and frequently hilarious Twitter updates. Now, finally, you can hear DVA’s Pretty Ugly in full.

The artist formerly known as Scratcha DVA has been a significant presence on the urban music scene for a minute now. As a DJ and Rinse FM host, he has played a pretty vital role in foregrounding the odder ends of the dance music spectrum; as a producer, he’s tilted from grime to funky and beyond. Pretty Ugly, his debut album, shows DVA thinking even further outside the box.

Maximalist beatmakers like Flying Lotus or Rustie are clearly an influence on Pretty Ugly. Many of these tracks are deliberately off-kilter, full of unexpected complications or weird sonic twists. It’s a highly textured, colourful record. To these ears, the highlights are the more fluid numbers like ‘Eye Know’ and the title track, but there are also lots of more conventionally rhythmic thrills to be had. The vocal-heavy album features contributions from Cornelia, A.L., Muhsinah, Natalie Maddix and Zaki Ibrahim
