Black Hippy’s always-loced genius wigs out.

Ab-Soul has taken a bit longer to find his niche than his Black Hippy compadres Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock (he’s yet the only member of the collective without his own Wikipedia article). Lamar and Q have gotten the most buzz, while Jay seemed to settle into a rough and tumble gangster aesthetic early on. Ab-Soul remains restless, though. After playing the role of middle-class conscious rapper, contrasting with the other members’ working-class origins and more worldly concerns, Soulo seems to have ceded the more introspective territory to Kendrick and developed a persona as an ornery, stoned wizard.

He recently took a star turn on Schoolboy Q’s ‘Druggys With Hoes Again‘, and now he returns with his own ‘Pineal Gland’, a track filled with murky bass, creeping John Carpenter pianos, and spaced-out imagery. He raps about smoking dimethyltryptamine, refs Mobb Deep’s ‘Survival Of The Fittest’, and sings creepy chants about “three eyes,” all in between shouts out to root beer floats, atomic nuclei, and Andromeda.
