Soft Metals’ ‘Psychic Driving’ was a perfectly calibrated slice of lucent electro-pop; it correspondingly placed respectably in our rundown of our favourite tracks of 2011.

Chicago double act The-Drum (very clever, boys) have given the track a menacing overhaul. It’s strange to hear such a delicately constructed original being eviscerated, scattered and thoroughly disordered. The-Drum’s sprawling version plays fast and loose with its references: the vocals are future garage, the sonic palette is pure IDM, the hats bring Southern rap to mind, and those drum fills belong on a Mad Decent release.

The track comes from a new 12″ collection of Soft Metals remixes on Sweating Tapes: Xander Harris and Copy also contribute cuts. All proceeds from the release go towards charity Doctors Without Borders, so it’s well worth investigating. The-Drum’s remix is also available to download for free below.
