Joel “Deadmau5” Zimmerman strips down Nine Inch Nails’ 2007 single ‘Survivalism,’ and it’s not what you’d expect.

Zimmerman’s remix presents neither the electro house bombast for which he’s known, nor the the radio-friendly industrial of the original. Instead, there’s a simple loud-quiet-loud dynamic that reveals an interest in NIN that predates the mouse mask. A brittle drum machine clicks with the song’s menacing bass line, and Trent Reznor’s nihilistic lyrics are given a hazy filter. Only during the chorus does the song open up, with booming drums reminiscent of ‘Eraser.’
