Former Edmonton Poet Laureate Cadence Weapon has remixed indie subverters Liars.

Rollie Pemberton’s rap alias tends to prove divisive: his busy, electro-indebted productions often do the business, but his flow can also be infuriatingly clunky. Following on from his recent LP Hope In Dirt City – not to mention some remix swopsies with Grimes – Pemberton has taken on Liars’ ‘Brats’, plucked from their conflicted recent LP WIXIW.

The grotty punk-funk of the original is dumped in favour of 8-bit turbulence. Pemberton sets off volleys of beeps, bleeps and 808 snare cracks, and the results sound like a gangland dispute between an Atari and a Commodore 64. Pemberton pops up in the track’s third act, and his cataract-of-consciousness flow proves much more palatable than some of his stolid performances at slower tempos.

The track is taken from the ‘Brats’ 12″, due on Mute on October 16. Vessel and David Scott Stone also provide reinterpretations. Pemberton’s version is available to stream or download below.
