New label boss Slugabed has remixed one of his charges.

The Ninja Tune regular recently launched the Activia Benz imprint, and he’s got some interesting ideas for the imprint: every release will come with lovingly prepared sleeve artwork, plus a joke on the back (any label that takes its cues from the Penguin biscuit is alright in our book).

Releases from newcomers Arm Wtchs Fngrs, Eloq and 813 are all expected in the new year, but Slugabed is kicking things off with an EP from Belarus-based 8-bit worshipper Deech. Alongside five bleepy original tracks, the Urnite EP also features a bonus remix of the title cut from Slugabed – and it’s available to nab for free below.

The original is a glowering 2-step/house hybrid in the Lapalux mould, although there are touches of S-Type’s proggy showmanship too. Slugabed’s remix is much cheerier, slicing and dicing Deech’s vocal sample over a flurry of marimba and woodblock. Slugabed shifts gears throughout, tilting from groovy to nutty and back to groovy again. It’s more antic than just about anything on this year’s Time Team, and all the better for it.

Urnite drops on December 10. [via XLR8R]
