Old Apparatus member A. Levitas showcases his gentler side.

Having caught notice with a fabulous EP for Deep Medi Musik in 2011, Old Apparatus were a force for good throughout 2012, releasing a captivating string of beautifully packaged EPs through their Sullen Tone imprint. All of the releases, amalgamating dub, post-rock and ambient, were hard to pin down, but Levitas’ Alfur was the brightest and most varied of the bunch.

His latest project, Saa, sees him capitalising on the hints of hip-hop and soul dotted through that EP. The project features contributions from singer singer Linn Carin Dirdal, and vocal-led soul is the order of the day. A clutch of tracks have been uploaded to Soundcloud: ‘Against Interpretation’ and ‘The Coming And Going Of Delight’ take major inspiration from Cooly G’s Playin Me, and come over like Amen Ra with added sass. The pick, though, is ‘Untitled (Dooper)’ – a dubby, choral piece that very much feels like Saa’s own.
