Alt-R&B singer SZA takes a morbid turn on the haunting 'Aftermath'

The Maplewood, New Jersey native pairs dark lyrics with a soul-warming instrumental.

Like the previously premiered ‘ICE.MOON’, ‘Aftermath’ is a synth-heavy soundscape that owes a great deal to Clams Casino’s based beats. Once again, SZA’s voice is gently sensual, but her lyrics show another side of the up-and-coming artist.

Alternating between bizarre (“I am not human / I am made of bacon”), lovelorn (“I doubt I’ll ever be anyone’s baby”), and morbid (“I hung myself and didnt die / I am omnipotent”), the juxtaposition between the song’s lyrics and WNDRBRD’s spaced-out instrumental make both stand out in relief. The song is the second single from her S EP, due out April 9.
