4AD's R&B enthusiasts Inc return with 'The Place'

Glitzy LA duo Inc are back.

Inc first caught the eye with the hall-of-mirrors retro funk of their 2010 ‘Fountains’ 7″ (issued as Teen Inc), but their real calling card was ‘Millionairess’, one of the year’s more exuberant examples of postmodern R&B. It had all the unabashed melody-making of The-Dream, but a rickety quality that ruled out any possibility of a Def Jam co-sign; some of Autre Ne Veut’s woozy sonics were present, but this was music designed to enthuse rather than confuse. The supple 3 EP dropped on 4AD last year, and suggested the pair have their eyes firmly planted on the stadium.

New track ‘The Place’ is something of a return to the taciturn mode of ‘Fountains’, although the production is comparatively spick’n’span. The track is a cyclic, unfussy jam, closer in tone to Sade than the band’s beloved Prince (it wouldn’t have sounded irregular smuggled onto How To Dress Well’s unexpectedly forthright Total Loss, in fact). A new album is expected later this year. [via Prefix]
