The festival will also travel to Russia, Ukraine and Asia this year.

Krakow’s Unsound Festival has revealed the theme for this year’s event: “Dislocation.”

As well as shaping the main Krakow event taking place from October 16-23, the theme will tie in with a number of international Unsound events including a series of mini festivals in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Central Asia and the Caucasus region.

“Dislocation” follows recent themes that include “surprise,” “the dream” and “interference,” each of which saw unusual policies enacted including a no photography rule and much of last year’s line-up not being revealed until the last minute.

No acts have yet been announced for this year’s festival, but last year’s bill included Holly Herndon, King Midas Sound, RP Boo, Andy Stott, Richie Hawtin, Kode9, UNIIQU3 and someone who sounded a lot like Burial.

“The long and provocative tension between ‘center’ and ‘periphery’ often fuels cultural development,” Unsound artistic director Mat Schulz explains in a press release. “Being based in Krakow, Poland, we know this well and have worked hard to break down such binaries.

“The very idea of a Polish-born festival producing prominent music events in New York, London, Toronto and Adelaide is unusual. But at a time when the world feels increasingly unstable, we want to more consciously explore all sorts of fertile peripheries in the context of geography, politics, identity, online interaction and more generally the contemporary social environment.”

As part of the theme, Unsound is calling for potential co-curators to pitch ideas for music and talks programming related to location (including the internet) that explore the idea of dislocation.

Unsound’s series of mini festivals will be joined by another edition of Unsound New York across June 16-18, programmed in association with Sustain-Release and The Bunker NY.

Tickets for Unsound 2016 will go on sale in the coming months, while those interested in pitching programming have until May 1 to email their ideas. Full information can be found at the Unsound website.
