FACT mix 63 is the handiwork of Werk Discs label boss, and the man behind last year’s stunning Hazvyille album, Actress.
One of the UK’s most intriguing and rewarding musicians, Actress’s label Werk Discs has been responsible for some of the best records of the last half-decade – not only Hazvyille, but Lukid’s Foma and Onandon, Zomby’s Where Were U In 92? and Disrupt’s Foundation Bit. Future releases include Lone’s forthcoming full-length, and a collaboration between producer Nochexxx and the Jungle Brothers’ MC Sensational.
Actress’ debt to Detroit techno – a musical form he appropriates into ghostly, greyscale sketches in his own material – is huge, and something he discusses in depth in his recent FACT interview, along with his background and the origins of Hazyville and Werk Discs. But his FACT mix is coming from somewhere else altogether, “a colour reel of 21st century pillow talk, diss records and Alan Partridge funk”, recorded live at Back to the Wood’s recent night at Gramophone. No tracklisting as of yet, but you’ll at least recognise Prince’s ‘Erotic City’ and the Pac Man music.
