This morning’s exclusive FACT mix comes from Jeff McIlwain, the techno producer best known as Lusine.

A stalwart of the Ghostly International camp (also home to Matthew Dear and Dabrye), he’s an expert at many styles – his records take in IDM, fat ambient, broken hip-hop and straight techno, and records like Serial Hodgepodge, Emerald and the Podgelism remix comp have garnered much play here at FACT HQ over the years.

This month he returns with a new full-length, A Certain Distance, his first for Ghostly since 2007. We talked to Jeff about the new album and what we can expect from it; while you’re reading that, download his session for FACT, which features his own material alongside that of Boards of Canada, Fulgeance, Luke Vibert, Flying Lotus, Dorian Concept, Four Tet and more.

(Available for three weeks)

Turn over for a full interview with Lusine about new album A Certain Distance.

Hey Lusine, how’s it going?

“Going well.”

Tell us about the mix you’ve done for FACT…

“I guess this is me trying to bridge the gap between downtempo pop, classic downtempo, and some of the newer weird stuff. Tried to bookend it with some more thematic stuff.”

What can we expect from your new album, A Certain Distance? How will it differ from what’s come before?

“Taking what I have done in the past and, in some cases, fusing it with some more pop structures. Just trying to branch out in new directions, refining what I like about things that I hear. Similar to Serial Hodgepodge, but maybe a bit more up front. SH had some more ambient material, A Certain Distance has less of that.”

We noticed you’ve got a lot of Cali new-school hip-hop on the mix – Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, etc – do they inform it in any way?

“Not really. I didn’t really hear that stuff until I finished the album. I like some of what they do. When it comes to that music, it seems like more of a logical progression of what’s come before rather than a totally new trend. So, in the mix, I was kind of trying to mix and match with some older tracks that I like as well.”

What else do you have in the pipeline – singles, remixes, etc?

“Working on some remixes. I think there will be a 12” of remixes from the album or another single with remixes for Twilight, or both. Also working on a remix for School of Seven Bells, finished a remix for Tycho, and working with a new vocalist, which is probably the next project I will pursue.

A Certain Distance is out now on Ghostly.
