It’s time to reclaim wobble. Once a characteristic of game-changing releases by Digital Mystikz, Loefah et al, basslines that oscillate until they sound like they’re wobbling have for too long now been synonymous with producers called things like Trolley Snatcha and Funt Case, and those dicks who wear the t-shirts with “DUB STEP” spelt out like the Run DMC logo. It’s about time the good guys took wobble back, and Fis-T is leading the charge.

There’s nothing new about ‘Night Hunter’, it’s not even that special a track on its own terms, but it is great to hear a track that deploys its wobble this effectively. And I do mean deploys; that bassline’s got purpose, it’s there to seek something out. Whereas the bassline on say, this sounds like someone working out their short man syndrome through music, this one’s packing SAS-style efficiency, and you’d never dream of trying to fuck with it.

Over on the B-side, ‘Deep Mover’ is minimal, string-led grime with UK funky drums and a bassline that comes like a submarine as opposed to the spy-plane of ‘Night Hunter’. It’s almost the inverse of the A-side, and makes for a classy accompaniment, but this 12”’s all about the lead track really. Score one for the good guys.
