This week sees the release of MU.ZZ.LE, the new mini-album on Warp from Gonjasufi.

The gravel-throated desert mystic – real name Sumach Ecks, apparently – has earned a fervent cult following on the back of his previous two transmissions of cracked, psychedelic hip-hop: remix album The Caliph’s Tea Party (2010) and debut full-length proper A Sufi A Killer (2011). MU.ZZ.LE, available on 2×10″, CD, download and (exclusive to Bleep in the UK) limited screenprinted poster, is his most engrossing and moody yet.

“[It’s] a way to reflect on my actions,” he says. “It’s very emotional and dark, the record. It’s been a dark time of my life, probably the darkest, but I’ve been able to manoeuvre through that and turn the darkness into light.”
