Reports have come in that Don Cornelius, the creator of TV institution Soul Train, has died.

An American music show that aired from 1971 to 2006, Soul Train featured some all-time classic performances from heroes of soul, funk, hip-hop, r’n’b and more, and remains the longest-running first-run syndicated program in television history, an achievement that, according to the show’s Wikipedia page, can’t be broken until 2017 – if Wheel of Fortune is still running.

According to TMZ, Cornelius appears to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A former journalist, he launched, produced, wrote, and hosted the show for 22 years, finally letting a succession of other hosts take over for him in 1993.
