Update: It seems that M.I.A.’s middle finger to the camera during the performance has sparked its fair share of Stateside controversy.

Both the NFL and NBC, who aired the Superbowl, have released statements on the incident [via Entertainment Weekly, via Pitchfork].  NBC said, “We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime. It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late.”

The NFL directed the blame at NPC, saying “There was a failure in NBC’s delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans”, only for NBC to retort with “The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers.”

So that half-time performance at the Superbowl with Madonna, Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. happened this weekend.

As you’d expect, footage is already online, and as you’d also expect it’s pretty over the top, with gladiators, golden thrones, Madonna’s best mum dancing and wigs-a-plenty. You can watch both the Superbowl performance and the video for ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ below.
